Did you know floors sag in several ways? Sagging floor issues are developed over time. Floors sag and fail for these reasons:
Floor support jacks can strengthen framing and help correct floors that sag because of inadequate support beneath the home. The repair may also require beam or joist reinforcement, moisture correction, or foundation work if another problem contributes to the uneven floor.
A contractor places permanent support jacks beneath beams or floor framing to transfer the floor load to a stable base below. Depending on the home, the contractor may also add supplemental beams or reinforce weakened joists to spread that support across a larger area.
A contractor can install the support system during the repair project, but the floor may need gradual adjustments rather than one aggressive lift. Wood framing often develops movement over many years, and slow correction can reduce the chance of damaging walls, trim, flooring, or other finishes above.
Moisture-damaged wood, settling support piers, sinking slabs beneath posts, inadequate beam spacing, foundation settlement, and insufficient support for heavy loads can all contribute to floor problems. Identifying the cause helps determine whether the home needs additional jacks, beam or joist repairs, moisture control, foundation stabilization, or another solution.
A home may need more support when floors sag, bounce, slope, develop low spots, or show movement around walls, doors, and trim. An inspection can determine whether adding support beneath the floor will address the problem or whether damaged wood or foundation movement also needs attention.
